2021- 2023: An Anthology of Cuban Women
“The work I began producing in 2021 has been a dive within. I wanted to counteract the erasure of Cuban female artists throughout history and bring a more realistic perspective on our identity in general. I’ve come to find media representations of us are limited and don’t quite capture the tremendous wit and bravery that the women in my life have taught me. When my niece grows up I don’t want her to have to subscribe to stereotypes of herself. I want my body of work to someday be the mirror I would’ve liked to have growing up. When you research the paintings and lives of Juana Borrero, of Concha Ferrant, the writings of Luisa Pérez de Zambrana and many others, there truly isn’t as much information as there should be. There’s a complexity and depth of character there that hasn’t been explored enough and that’s what I try to do through my work. All I’ve ever needed in life are my mother’s strong arms, and they are what I return to every single time I reach for a paintbrush.”
